The first person we spoke with during our fieldwork was the 84 year old Frau Meyer. She lives on the German side of the Nieuwstraat/Neustraße and was trying to defrost the front window of her car by pouring lukewarm water over it when we walked past her. She said hello and we decided to try to strike up a conversation with her. But we were also a bit hesitant and insecure about how to go about this because of the corona pandemic. “Darf ich Sie etwas fragen?” I asked. She nodded yes. “Entschuldigung mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut.” I said. She replied: “Ich spreche aber auch Niederländisch.”
